Untitled (Madonna and Child) with 19th Century Frame

oil paint on unprimed cotton canvas
timber and composition frame, flash gilded with bronze power

A Renaissance-style frame which accompanied a study painting on an artist-constructed canvas and strainer, depicting a Madonna and Child portrait scene. Curiously, the painting incorporated a frame surrounding the scene, painted into the composition. This unique design indicated that the painting was potentially created in-situ, copied from another original artwork, and the gold-coloured frame added at a later time. The frame had undergone water damage, which resulted in green-coloured corrosion appearing along the bottom of the frame. The bronze paint had also discoloured to dark brown in the top half of the frame. There were a number of missing decorative elements, and cracks and losses to the corners.

To restore the frame, we:

  • removed corrosion and discolouration with solvents

  • moulded and cast existing decorative elements in order to reinstate missing elements

  • shaped and surfaced cast fills to match existing texture and level with surrounding areas

  • retouched new fills and discoloured areas

To restore the painting, we:

  • replaced strainer with new artist-quality stretcher

  • flattened canvas

  • repaired tears in canvas

  • retouched paint losses around tears
