Edwardian Silk Embroidery

silk embroidery thread on silk backing

A silk embroidery applique patch, depicting a pattern of flowers and leaves in a triangular bushel design, repeating in three parts. Two parts were still attached together with one single piece loose. These intricate designs were made by a client’s ancestor, and were unable to be enjoyed in their current state due to the fragile nature of the silk backing fabric. To stabilise and prepare for display, we:

  • stabilised pieces onto a supporting tulle backing, using colour-matched silk threads

  • strip-lined the tulle onto a stretcher

  • worked with the client and framer to safely house the work for display
